Nurpur was a large state sandwiched between Jammu, Chamba, Kangra and Punjab plains. It's original capital city was Pathankot or Paithan. The rulers are called Pandir as they claimed descent from Pandavas. It is possible that Nurpur arose out of the ashes of the Kabul Shahi empire around 1000 AD and the founder of the line Jhet Pal is a younger brother of the Tomara king of Delhi Anangapala - he advanced north to provide succor to Trigarta which was under a Muslim siege, crossed Beas at a ford called Bhet because of which he was called Rana Bhet and ejected the Kuzbak Khan, the Governor of Pathankot to become the master of the area.
Jas Pal is the first historically known name and is contemporaneous to the Khilji ruler Alauddin Khilji and his successor Kalas Pal is known to have defeated a Muslim commander from Khorasan Tatar Khan and was lavishly gifted by Delhi for that. However, another Tatar Khan is known, a Governor of Punjab who was killed in 1342 in a fight with Gakhars.
