The Kachhwahas trace their origin from Kusa, the second son of Lord Rama. One of his descendants, Raja Nala migrated west in AD 295 and founded the kingdom of Narwar or Naishadha. His son was Dhola Rai, famous in the annals and Dhola Rai's great grandson founded Gwalior. Thirty two generations continued their rule till Sodh Dev, 95th in succession from Lord Rama, on whose death his son Dulha Rai was expelled from the kingdom in 967 by Sodh Dev's brother who seized the government. The child's mother, dressed as a commoner put the infant in a basket and stopped at Khogaon near Jaipur. Hungry, when she was plucking some wild berries, she saw a snake protecting her son from sun. A Brahmin passing by noticed her shriek and prophesized great future for the boy. He asked her to go to Khogaon where she begged a servant of the chieftain of the place for food and employment. One day, she prepared food for the chieftain who noticing a superior taste summoned her. She narrated her story and he adopted her as his sister and Dulha Rai as his nephew. When he was fourteen, he was sent to Delhi along with the tribute of the place. There, he stayed for five years and plotted to seize the estate from his uncle. With the help of a bard Mina Dharhi who suggested him to take advantage of Diwali when the Minas performed ablutions en masse. With the Rajput associates he brought with him, he slaughtered the Minas and then killed the bard saying He who had proved unfaithful to one master could not be trusted by another. After seizing Khogaon, he demanded the daughter of the chieftain of Dausa who questioned the validity of the marriage stating that both are from Suryavamsa. However, he was convinced and having no successor, Dulha Rai succeeded him. Soon, he ejected the rulers of Dausa and from his base at Dausa, he started to subdue the Minas – Rao Nata, the chieftain of Sira tribe of Minas who ruled from Mechh was defeated and Dulha Rai shifted his capital to Mechh, which he renamed Ramgarh. He would buy peace with Minas by returning back their estates but under him as the suzerain. Deoti attacked on his usurpation of Dausa but was defeated. Some time later, he conquered Deoti and other Bargujar fortresses. He then married the princess of Ajmer by name Maroni but his aggression towards the Minas meant that they tried to stop him going to the temple of Jamwahi Mata – the Minas were defeated amidst much slaughter but Dulha Rai too was killed. Maroni escaped and bore a posthumous son who was named Kankhal who conquered the country of Dhundhar. His son Maidal conquered Amber from the Susawat Minas headed by Bhato who was also the head of Mina confederation. Kuntal when leaving to Bhatwar to marry the daughter of the sovereign, Prithviraj Chauhan was accosted by the Minas of his kingdom who demanded he leave all the trappings of sovereignty before leaving the kingdom – he refused and the Minas were defeated with great slaughter.
