Ex Bilaspur Tributary States - Baghal, Baghat, Balsan, Bheja, Bhajji
The name Ex-Bilaspur Tributary States is a curious one. It refers to the fact that the states of Baghal, Baghat, Balsan, Beja, Bhajji, Dhami, Keonthal, Mangal, Nehra(lapsed), Kuthar, Kunihar and Mahlog which were released from Kahlur’s suzerainty after the Gurkha invasion is rolled back.

The origin of the word Baghal is not known - it is derived either from Gabhal or centre and Baghar, the ruling clan of the estate. Baghat, of the same clan was originally known as Bagharghat. The ruling clan claims descent from Ajai De, a Panwar Rajput from Ujjain who carved a kingdom for himself in the hills. During the Gurkha invasion, the king fled to Nalagarh. For the services in 1857, the Rana of Baghal received the title of Raja.
