Charkhari derives it's name from Chakrapuri and the kingdom is a scattered lot of nine estates. The rule of Khuman Singh who received the estate from his uncle Pahar Singh of Jaitpur after a long-drawn rebellion was peaceful. In the later part of his rule, when his brother Guman Singh of Ajaigarh decided to adopt Khuman Singh's son Vikramjit or Vijay Bahadur as successor, court intrigues in Ajaigarh brought the brothers to blows. In the Battle of Pandori, Khuman Singh was killed and Vijay Bahadur took the throne in 1782. Ajaigarh's troops under Arjun Singh Panwar then invested Mangalgarh. In the middle of the siege, Vijay Bahadur lost heart and fled to Jhansi. The siege eventually failed and on the other side, Vijay Bahadur joined Ali Bahadur, a grandson of Peshwa Baji Rao and Himmat Bahadur, the head of Gosain Sect who entered Bundelkhand to carve their own territory.
